Guatemala Las Verapaces

The mountainous and remote departments of Alta Verapaz and Baja Veragaz, together known as 'Las Verapaces'.

Las Verapaces stretch across a band of steep limestone highlands where rivers cut through deep gorges, forests cling to sharp slopes and long cave systems run beneath the ridges. Cobán stands at the centre, a highland city with a large Q’eqchi’ population and a cathedral holding wooden saints that have been carried in local processions for generations. The streets around the plaza are lined with hardware shops, market sheds and offices, but it is the valleys dropping away from the city that lead to the features that set this region apart.

East of Cobán, the road descends through folds of forest toward Lanquín. At Lanquín a cave opens into a chamber so big it stops most visitors the moment they step inside. The roof rises out of view, supported by thick columns of calcite built up layer by layer over thousands of years. The walkways fixed along the wall give a clear view of the formations: broad mineral curtains, hollowed channels, smooth terraces where water once stood, and ribs of stone shaped by long-vanished streams. Only the first section is lit, but there’s plenty to take in without going further. The acoustics are striking. Drips echo from different heights, and a low, constant hum comes from water moving somewhere beneath the floor. You can pick out the shine of minerals on the walls and the rougher patches where rock has fractured and been rebuilt over time.

The change comes at dusk. A crack high in the ceiling becomes the exit route for thousands of bats leaving to feed along the riverbanks. They come out in a tight, organised stream that passes over the platforms and out toward the treeline. The line holds its shape for several minutes, sometimes longer, and is easy to watch from the walkway. It’s a rare moment where the cave’s scale and silence give way to something fast, concentrated and completely natural. When the last stragglers leave, the chamber settles back into its usual stillness.

A few kilometres away, the Cahabón River disappears under a thick limestone bridge at Semuc Champey. From above, the river seems to end abruptly, replaced by a series of stepped pools built by mineral deposits. Each basin has a slightly different depth and colour, with pale rims formed by layers of calcium carbonate laid down over centuries. Water flows across the terraces in thin sheets, slipping quietly from one pool to the next. The bridge beneath is solid and broad, the result of mineral build-up sealing the top of a former canyon.

Downstream, the real river resurfaces. It bursts from a low cave mouth with remarkable force, throwing out branches and foam carried from far upstream. The contrast between the calm pools above and the raw energy of the river emerging below is immediate. The two parts of the system — buried river and surface pools — sit almost side by side, offering a rare, visible example of a river splitting into radically different paths within a confined space. Over time the outlines of the pools shift as new mineral layers accumulate, subtly altering the edges and steps.

North-west of Lanquín, the Candelaria cave system shows what happens when water carves its way through limestone on a far greater scale. Visitors enter chambers tall enough to swallow buildings, with rooflines vanishing into darkness. The galleries stretch for long distances, their floors shaped by underground rivers that still flow through some sections. Openings in the roof allow beams of daylight to fall straight onto the water, revealing polished channels and rock shelves left behind by ancient floods. Ceramic fragments and carved stones discovered in protected alcoves indicate that parts of the network were used by Maya travellers moving between the highlands and the plains. The echoes inside the largest chambers can be heard long before the water itself becomes visible.

South of Cobán, the land rises again into the cloud forests protected by the Biotopo del Quetzal. From the entrance, the forest closes in quickly: trunks coated in moss and liverworts, tree ferns spreading outward like umbrellas, and orchids attached to almost every available branch. Fallen fruits from wild avocado trees — the quetzal’s main food — lie split on the ground, often showing marks from birds or squirrels. The nesting hollows used by quetzals are small circular openings several metres up the trunks of older trees, and staff keep quiet track of which ones are active during the season.

Small streams cross the trails, clear and fast, moving over stone beds smoothed by constant flow. In places where a tree has fallen, the canopy opens briefly to reveal the steep contour of the ridge. The vegetation shifts quickly with height: bromeliads become more abundant, moss thickens, and the trunks grow denser coats of epiphytes. The forest holds emerald toucanets, mountain thrushes, trogons and numerous insects adapted to constant moisture, making it one of the clearest surviving examples of mid-elevation cloud forest in the central highlands.

Immediately beside the biotope, Ranchitos del Quetzal preserves another stretch of forest with a slightly different character. The canopy is lower, the understory heavier, and the air more still. Metal tags around certain trunks mark long-term monitoring points for orchid and bird studies. Tiny Lepanthes orchids grow in clusters on thin branches, many species restricted to narrow elevation bands in the Verapaz region. Early mornings bring a run of bird calls, and caretakers keep simple handwritten records pinned to boards noting which species were heard along different parts of the slope.

Beyond the cloud-forest belt the limestone gives way to gentler landforms as the region moves into Baja Verapaz. Salamá acts as the administrative centre, with commercial streets and public buildings. Just outside town stands San Jerónimo, a seventeenth-century Dominican complex built around stone aqueducts, fermentation tanks and storehouses laid out to process sugar, indigo and cacao. The structure remains intact enough for visitors to trace the channels, platforms and working spaces that once ran as a single system.

East of Salamá, Rabinal maintains the traditional performance of the Rabinal Achí, a dance-drama staged annually using carved cedar masks and embroidered garments held by specific families. In the hills above the town, Postclassic fortified sites contain stone walls, terraces and ceramics marking Achi’ Maya settlement.

Farther east, the Chixoy River canyon exposes layers of limestone cut by the river into sheer walls. Rock shelters, terraces and scattered pottery fragments mark earlier communities along the cliff margins. The waterfall at Salto de Chilascó, more than 130 metres high, drops from a limestone shelf into a ravine covered in mosses, ferns and bromeliads fed by constant spray. The surrounding hills form the lower flank of the Sierra de las Minas, where long-term biodiversity studies monitor species across different altitude bands.
