A journey down the west coast is a must for any visit to Trinidad. For birders and photographers Pointe-a-Pierre wildfowl trust and Caroni swamp (where spectacular scarlet ibis come in to roost) are a delight. Pointe a Pierre & Caroni Swamp

Morning visit to the lovely Pointe a Pierre Wildfowl Trust and Waterloo mudflats where there is the Temple-in-the-Sea followed by a late afternoon boat tour in the Coroni swamp for sightings of the beautiful Scarlet Ibis. Return to your guest house in a suburb of Port of Spain for 2 nights.

DAY 8

A strenuous and exhilarating trek to the top of Trinidad’s second highest mountain (3,100ft). The trail winds first through abandoned cacao plantations, then into the rainforest, climbing steadily through mist and montane forest up the challenging west face. If the clouds permit, there are excellent panoramic views from the summit. Or if this is too much to take on you could have a day at the beach.

The turtles! Also we enjoyed the birds, the scenery and meeting local people. The quick tour of Tobago on our stop-over was also good.
