Health and hygiene standards in Venezuela are generally very reasonable, though lower than in Europe.

Although not compulsory, your doctor or travel clinic may recommend your polio, typhoid, and tetanus inoculations are up to date and that you have yellow fever and infective hepatitis A vaccinations.

Malaria is reported in only some areas. Your doctor will probably advise both proguanil (daily) and chloroquine (weekly) antimalarial tablets, to cover up legs and arms, particularly at dusk, and to use an insect repellent containing DEET (diethyl-toluamide).

Consult your doctor or travel clinic well in advance, preferably 6 weeks before travel.
