Tobago as a dive destination
Tobago offers some of the most pristine and exciting dive habitats in the Caribbean and is one of its most highly regarded dive destinations.
The island of Tobago lies at the confluence of the Atlantic and the Caribbean amid a flow of nutrients from the Guyana Current. These warm plankton-rich waters, fed by the Orinoco, are the basis of a flourishing underwater eco-system. Clouds of tropical fish form impressive displays over thick coral cover; barrel sponges, sea fans and brain corals grow to record-breaking proportions. Large pelagics are attracted from the Caribbean and the colder Atlantic waters, most notable of these is the manta ray.
Most dives around Tobago are drift dives, ranging from gentle drifts that require some swimming to exhilarating roller coaster rides. Dives are usually from open pirogues, the traditional local fisherman’s craft with a high bow suited to these waters. As most sites are fairly close-in, dive boats usually return to shore after each immersion, which can work well if you have a non-diving partner.
When to dive Tobago
Year-round average underwater visibility is 60ft (18m). Visibility is best from December to May.
Diving is possible all year but not every site is diveable on any given day. Water conditions can be rough between July and September, but even then on most days your dive company will be able to select at least one of Tobago’s dive regions with sufficiently calm conditions. There can be a few days of rough seas in December.
April and May give the best prospects of calm sea and good visibility and this is when the reefs are teeming with spawning fish and recently hatched young.
Between June and November rain run-off can effect underwater visibility on the leeward (Caribbean) side of the island. Ocean currents usually clear the water in a couple of days.
