Bird-watching holidays to Trinidad & Tobago
Trinidad & Tobago is a splendid easy introduction to the bird families of South America and provides one of the most unforgettable avian spectacles when lines of Scarlet Ibis fly in to roost in Trinidads Caroni Swamp.
Bird watching on Trinidad & Tobago
Physically and biologically - and so for bird watching - the twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago are quite different from each other.
Together they make a very pleasant bird watching holiday experience.
Trinidad & Tobago offer bird watchers a wide variety of habitats with montane and lowland rainforest, elfin forest, savanna grassland, fresh and saltwater swamp, freshwater reservoir, ocean beaches, open ocean and coral reefs.
This diversity of birding habitat and the proximity of the Venezuelan mainland (7 miles from Trinidad) explains why so many neotropical bird families are represented here, including toucans, motmots, manakins, cotingas, woodcreepers, jacamars, parrots, tanagers, honeycreepers, hummingbirds, antthrushes and oropendolas.
Over 430 species of birds have been recorded on the islands. There is one endemic, the rare Trinidad Piping Guan.
Most birding takes place on Trinidad, but many bird watchers like to include a few days on Tobago where there are 13 bird species which do not occur on Trinidad, and some good sea birds.
Good field observations can be made throughout the year. January to March is the dry season and coincides with the presence of North American migrants.
