To Granada

Day 1 You are met on the Nicaraguan side of the border from Costa Rica at Peñas Blancas by your experienced English-speaking Nicaraguan guide who drives you along the shore of Lake Nicaragua to the colonial city of Granada.

Afternoon city tour of Granada. Stay 3 nights at an upper range hotel.

Masaya

Day 2 BL In the morning visit Masaya Volcano, then return to Granada for some free time in this lovely city. Later in the afternoon explore the Isletas de Granada by boat.

Pueblos Blancos and Catarina

Day 3 BL Today you visit the villages known as Los Pueblos Blancos. The locals are descendents of the Chorotega people and each village specialises in a particular handicraft. At Catarina there are great views of Apoya lagoon, the landscape around Granada and Lake Nicaragua.

León

Day 4 BL Your guide drives you to the university city of León, partly by Lake Managua with views of Momotombo and Momotombito volcanoes, stopping at León Viejo. In León your guide takes you to Subtiava church, the Ortiz-Gurdian art museum, Rubén Darío museum and the Metropolitan Cathedral–one of the most important colonial buildings in Central America. Stay at a El Convento (see opposite).

Northern Highlands and Selva Negra

Day 5 BLD Visit fumaroles at San Jacinto, on to stay at La Selva Negra: a mid-range lodge on an organic coffee farm in the highlands. Explore the hacienda and walk in the cloud forest.

Managua

Day 6 BL Drive to Managua, which has dramatic crater lakes at its edge. There is much living history to hear as you tour the capital: the 1972 earthquake which destroyed much of the city, the long Somoza dictatorship which then embezzled the quake relief funds, the revolution and the attempt to create a new society, and the years of struggle against the US-backed Contras. You also visit the National Museum and the evocative ‘Footprints of Achualinca’. Stay at a upper range hotel.

Day 7 B An early transfer to Managua for your flight home.
