Cuban Cigars
Cuban cigar makers were traditionally educated by lectors and each worker paid a contribution towards their Lector’s wage.
The wonderful names of the different cigars denote their diameter, length, shape and colour and even what the lector was reading at the time of manufacture e.g. Romeo y Julieta and Hamlet!
The Lectors sat in a chair elevated above the cigar roller tables in a factory so their voices could be easily heard throughout the room. They read out-loud novels and newspaper articles creating an awareness of politics and world events among the workers. This still happens today but only for an hour in the morning, when newspapers are read to the workers and an hour in the afternoon, when workers can select which book they want. The rest of the day the workers listen to pop music or novellas, soap operas!
