Che Guevara is much loved in Cuba and Cuba encourages the myth. We have been fortunate to meet people, who knew Che intimately and worked for him. The one outstanding fact we have learnt about him is that he always kept his promises to the people. He promised the people around Baracoa that he would complete the road from Santiago de Cuba to Baracoa to enable them easier access to the outside world. He personally supervised the construction of La Farola, which opened up Baracoa towards the south and the towns of Guantanamo and Santiago de Cuba. Che also opened the chocolate factory in Baracoa in 1963. Until the completion of La Farola, Baracoa was almost inaccessible from Santiago, so Che’s contribution was of immense importance. Nowadays Baracoa is a popular Cuba holiday destination. It was Che's victory at Santa Clara that marked the end of the long revolutionary struggle and victory for the rebels.
