Freedom Selfdrive allows you to benefit from the discounts that hotels are prepared to give when they would otherwise have empty rooms, while giving you the freedom to travel around Costa Rica without a fixed schedule.

We’ve put it all together at a very low price in one simple package that includes:

• easy arrival and departure When you arrive you are met at the airport and driven to your hotel. On your return you can drop your car by the airport.

With Freedom Selfdrive you book your accommodation as you go and use vouchers for payment.  Our Freedom Selfdrive scheme is always being updated with new hotels and vehicles, so make sure that you have the most up-to-date Booking Information insert which describes the choices–or see our website.

The scheme operates outside the high season (for dates see the Booking Information insert). During the high season and throughout the year we can design a selfdrive holiday for you and pre-book all your hotels throughout your trip. See the suggested routes opposite for examples.

How Freedom Selfdrive works

First, make your choice of:

• car
• hotel category

When you book you let us know your choice of hotel in or near San José for your first night. Flights from Europe arrive at Alajuela, near San José, in the early evening. You are met at the airport and driven to your hotel.

At about 8.30am next day you have a briefing meeting at your hotel with our local organiser who will provide your hotel vouchers, answer questions about driving in Costa Rica and discuss your travel plans. At around 9am your car is delivered to the hotel by the rental company. You also receive a mobile phone with a free card for 60min of local calls (extra cards are widely available).

Then you go as you please, choosing hotels and lodges from the category you selected. There are currently 107 in the 2012 scheme, covering almost the entire country. The only condition is that you book as you go, no sooner than the morning of the day before. If you are planning to stay more than 1-3 nights at a certain place we recommend pre-booking that section before you travel, especially at beach hotels during high season.

In each main area there is a choice of hotels and lodges, so if one hotel is full there is a very good chance that another will have space. The scheme is very flexible, and you can upgrade to a higher category hotel at any time by paying an appropriate supplement. 

If within a main area where you want to stay no hotels in your category have space (which is unlikely) just call the 24hr local helpline who guarantee to find you a reasonable alternative at no extra cost. 

At the end of your trip, simply drop the car at the rental company’s office at the airport.

Price variations

Breakfasts All hotels and lodges in the scheme include breakfasts, except those marked 'XB' on the list of hotels, where breakfast is at an extra charge.

Children Under 10 years Free, if travelling with two adults and sharing their room.

Foursomes Four people sharing two rooms pay only 75% of the basic price per person.

Threesomes With three people sharing one triple room the third person pays just £25 per night. For a single room the third person pays £44 per night for Category A, £50 for B.

Single rooms For two people each requiring single rooms add £27 per person per night for Category A, £35 for Category B.

Extra drivers Add £4 per day per extra driver insured.

Late return Add £40 per vehicle to return the car on the last day after the time it was delivered on the first day.

Extra nights Terios/A £50, Terios/B £55, Gran Tucson/A £55, Gran Tucson/B £60, Nativa/A £65, Nativa/B £70, per person per night.

Upgrades You can easily upgrade to a higher category of hotel on any night as you travel, by paying a supplement direct to the hotel. To upgrade from Category A to B = US$10 per room per night. 

Solo travellers Double the basic price.
