Hotel choices in Costa Rica
We travel extensively in Costa Rica, usually once or twice a year, to keep an eye on which hotels currently best suit the different tastes of our clients.
We particularly look for hotels in great locations or with character. We look for good standards to suit the style of the hotel. The ones we like best are often personally run by wonderful owners with a real passion.
The owners of many of these wonderful hotels are keen to adopt sustainable management practices, and we are equally keen to support them through our innovative relationship with The Rainforest Alliance with whom we have established an alliance to support best management practices in sustainable tourism since 2007.
Where a hotel has achieved a certified level of sustainability, we tend to recommend them over otherwise similar hotels, and we hope you will agree. See each hotel's listing here to see whether it has achieved its certification yet.

There are many other worthwhile hotels in Costa Rica that we also recommend to clients depending on preferences and budgets. (For example, our Freedom Selfdrive scheme currently includes a choice of over 150 hotels throughout the country.)
Please note that a hotel's inclusion on this website does not imply that it has been inspected by us for health and safety. For such matters we rely on local regulations and enforcement, supported by management training given through voluntary courses offered locally through The Rainforest Alliance which we encourage through our alliance with them.
Prices
For Costa Rican hotels we use the following to indicate relative prices:
MID-RANGE A good standard option which we think is comfortable and pleasant but without frills, at a price to suit the typical traveller. Guest bedrooms all have private bathrooms of course.
UPPER RANGE Something superior marks these hotels out, such as particularly nice dιcor and furnishings, above average food or an enviable location, with a price to match.
TOP RANGE At the upper end of what is available. A special place to stay, but at a top of the market price-wise. High prices do not always mean luxury facilities, but may reflect the remoteness of the location.
